Workshop Starfish

Winter Project 2006 / 2007

At the kite festival in Lünen we had borrowed our last remaining small starfish to Otmar and Jutta.

They had long time ago the idea to sew a inflateble kite. Then we thought we also could build two, three or four starfish.

About 7 years ago we have been sewn 8 - 10 starfish.

So quickly created the templates and cut to this day about 75 sqm ripstop nylon in order to sew it again.

So a starfish devours 25 meters (82 ft) ripstop nylon. The front consists of 20 segments that are sewn together in a circle.

Then the eyes with the pupils, the mouth and upper air intake are sewn.

At the back the zipper is sewn in, so to get later better to the internal ropes.

At the bottom corners is sewn in a loop to attach the tail, which should be at least 20 meters (65 ft) long.

Then, after the drawing the inner ropes (84 pieces) were be linked.

An approximately 13 meters (42 ft) encircling strips of 36 cm (1,2 ft)wide, is sewn to the front or rear. On the two straight sides will ever sewed a air inlet.

Then plug in the front or rear mirrored and stitch up. Pull all through the zipper to the outside and the interior work can begin.

84 internal ropes had to be knotted and over 100 meters (328 ft) bridle line must be attached.

Back with zipper........................................... Front made of 20 parts

................................. A side segment.................................. Air intake for the sides and the front part

........ Finished sewn air inlet........................................

Finished front

The result looks like this .....

The scale consists of four separate groups, each with about 25 meters (82 ft) rope. All bridle lines are attached to the points of the inner ropes.

All four points down to one point.

The flight report will be submitted after the kite festival in Berck sur Mer. Then we shall be trying to fly them as a train.

Sounds complicated. It is also :-)

They can also fly in a train
